About the play

Memories have flavours, smells, sounds and colours. They taste like plum cake, smell like old paper, sound like crackling phone lines and glow Trabbi green.

Splitter collects memories like these and reassembles them. Little snippets of life, the everyday, and of history, which all have one thing in common: They lead back to a country that no longer exists – the GDR.

In the fissures between past and present, in stories, letters and song lyrics, begins a search for clues in a time that today can often only be grasped in fragments.
Diverse perspectives and modes of expression – music and words, biography and history, interactive moments and thought experiments – are pieced together like a collage, forming different approaches to contemporary history.

This collective creation is based on stories from the actors’ own families, shaped by experiences of escape and emigration, and of staying and being left behind. They ask: What has the GDR to do with us today?
